AKC's Top-Trending Dog Names of 2024

Bringing a new dog into your home is super exciting, and one of the best parts is picking out a name! But let’s be honest, finding the perfect name can be tricky. You want something that really captures their vibe and looks. To help out, the American Kennel Club (AKC) has put together a list of the most popular dog names for 2024.

The AKC, which is a nonprofit, based this list on their registration stats and enrollments in their Canine Partners program. You’ll see some classic names like Max and Bella, but there are also newer ones like Stella, which jumped from 20th place last year to eighth this year.

Overall, the list hasn’t changed too much since last year. Luna is still the queen of girl dog names, taking the top spot again. But for boy names, Milo has taken over from Max, moving up from fifth to first. Teddy also made a big leap this year, landing in third place and pushing Charlie and Cooper down to fourth and fifth.

“Dogs are such a huge part of our lives, and picking a name for your new pet is a fun part of the journey,” says Gina DiNardo, the AKC Executive Secretary. “People really think hard about their dog’s name and often spend ages trying to find the perfect fit.”
